Live Out Loud: Creating a Digital Legacy

The term “Digital Citizenship” is used often when discussing how to protect ourselves and our students online. But in a world where we are “Googled” what can we do to control what appears online? How can we provide opportunities for students to learn about Digital Citizenship, create a positive Digital Presence and take control of their Digital Legacies?
This session will examine how educators can both support and model effective strategies for integrating Digital Citizenship into the work that they do. A variety of digital tools and teaching strategies will be shared to support this learning journey for both teachers and students. Examples are intended to be highly portable and transferable – something you can try tomorrow in your classrooms and schools.
Did I Enable a Cyberbully? Learning to Embrace Social Media in the Elementary Classroom

What do we do as educators when cyberbullying happens with our students and invades our learning space? How does a 12 year-old understand the long-lasting impact of their online decisions? In this session, follow the journey of a typical grade 6 class when a cyber-bullying incident (on Instagram) became a tangible reality for both students and parents. Through inquiry, students worked across the curriculum to determine “How can our class use social media for good?” and “How can we prevent social media being used as a weapon?” Learn how students came to understand the concept of digital citizenship and the critical role they each play in their digital communities. Come to this session to hear about successes, challenges, and lessons learned as social media and access to multiple digital technologies become a reality in today’s classrooms.
